It was pretty nice, though chilly in winter. We had dinner in Baobar, the veggie restaurant/bar attached to reception. The rooms are set within the botanic gardens and ours was basic but pleasant, clean and comfortable (though using the shower tended to result in flooding half the room). The hotel itself is a charming oasis retreat.

None of these are walkable but all are near-ish. If you plan the transport, this hotel is a great base for Masada, Ein Gedi Nature Reserve, and the Dead Sea beach. The hotel also has one taxi - ask for the number in case you get stranded as we did at one point. Sheruts follow similar bus timetables but are speedier. The public bus conveniently drops you at reception and conveys you around the whole area, albeit infrequently, so be sure to consult a bus timetable. If you are bringing someone new on a romantic date In the hope of getting some - you might consider seeking another venue. All that being said, this is somewhat more of a family place where you can also come with friends to have fun. To work up an appetite for the wonderful evening you can take a walk through the kibbutz’s botanical garden and along the promenade where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the clayish mountains through the safety of chicken wire.

The wine, recommended to us by the aspiring kibbutz sommelier was very good as well: a full bodied but not too sharp Golan Heights Cabernet - very smooth and gentle for its young age (2015). But the fruit baskets ,non-dairy ice creams and frutti-di-bosco (I am sure they call it something else, but we all know what it is) - were outstanding as well. Our favorite was the poppyseed pie - a short crust basket filled with an inch of pure poppyseed filling, like the homentashen of our childhood - sweet, rich and aromatic. The chicken soup, the Jewish antibiotic, just like your bubbe used to make, perfectly complimented by tiny soup nuts puréed pea soup delicately spiced with cardamon and some herbs that we failed to identify (the place is booming with rosemary and oregano, we bet it found its way in there), chicken, beef, the explosion of salads, perfectly pickled mushrooms (herbed and salted, not vinegared), potato, goulash, falafel, beef, goose leg in orange sauce, everything - beyond delicious. But if you are at the table for food rather than appearances - we strongly recommend dropping by for a bite even if you are staying somewhere else (for those staying in Ein Gedi dining anywhere else would be insane) We tried everything. So the snobs amongst us who would be put off by that mere fact are welcome to drive 18-20 miles to Arad and dine there, paying slightly more for substantially lesser fare. It might be missing a cheese line up (which would go fantastic with simple but presentative selection of Golan wines served here), but otherwise it was a true gem hidden in the salty sands of the Dead Sea. This place does not have waiters (except for the alcohol and we’ll touch on that later). Well, color me surprised to the point of shocked. But we happened to settle here for a couple of nights on our way to Masada and not feeling like driving 20 miles for dinner we cautiously entered the only dining game in town, the Ein Gedi Hotel Restaurant. Toiling the land, the common good, ‘one for all and all for one’ and similar socialistish attitudes - does not exactly conjure up images of good food, fine wines and generally hedonistic way of life. To tell you the truth, the concept of the kibbutz does not inspire us. The chicken soup, the Jewish antibiotic, just like. But if you are at the table for food rather than appearances - we strongly recommend dropping by for a bite even if you are staying somewhere else (for those staying in Ein Gedi dining anywhere else would be insane)
